10 Questions with the Hettie Company
Since starting our blog we have had one vision in mind. Featuring & supporting British companies. We are finally getting there – when Amelia leaves the house she is wearing products made in England & designed by British companies! Hettie is based in the countryside & champions not only British design & production but British wool too! We couldn’t be happier to work with this beautiful company! We hope you will enjoy learning more about Hettie as much as we did !
1. When did The Hettie Company begin it’s journey
Hettie was born out of an idea started around the garden table one evening at one of our BBQs. These are something we have regularly, in proper British style ‘whatever the weather’. We set up the company at the end of 2015 and are loving the journey.
2. What inspired you to create such a beautiful British Wool collection?
We live in the glorious countryside in Warwickshire near the river, and have many beautiful walks and villages right on our doorstep. We wanted to design and make a country inspired collection, and having come across the gorgeous fabrics of Abraham Moon we know that these would be perfect. There are so many beautiful fabrics for us to choose from and we have so many ideas for products ranges for the future!
We love to spend time together as a family, and enjoy nothing better than all gathering around the table sharing food and laughter. The family is growing steadily with toddlers adding their fun and noise, and of course our dogs are very much part of everything. We can’t imagine not having a dog around, and they have inspired us to include the pet accessories as part of our range.
3. Could you tell us more about the campaign for Wool
We are very proud to have been accepted under the Campaign for wool banner . Wool is such a wonderful friendly fibre – natural , durable and sustainable
The Campaign for Wool is a global endeavour initiated by its patron, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, in order to raise awareness amongst consumers about the unique, natural, renewable and biodegradable benefits offered by the fibre.
Encouraging collaboration between an international community of woolgrowers, major fashion designers, retailers, manufacturers, artisans and interior designers, the Campaign has been instrumental in educating consumers about the versatility of wool, and reconnecting them with its myriad uses; From luxurious fine merino knitwear and cloth through beautiful hardwearing interior products to fire-retardant insulation for the home.
Since its launch in 2010, The Campaign for Wool has influenced a new demand for wool on an international scale, and its efforts have seen an outstanding threefold increase in the price farmers receive for their wool.
4. Do you have any four legged friends at the Hettie headquarters ?
We have always had dogs around the Hettie family – can’t imagine being without one. We have gone down to just one at the moment after old age has taken two dear friends from us recently. We are left with gorgeous Bruce – our nutty bouncy boxer dog. He was a rescue dog after being badly treated , and has learnt to trust that he is loved and safe with us.
5. Could you share with us your favourite dog friendly location?
We have lots of dog friendly pubs near our house. Recently we took Bruce on a canal narrowboat for a long weekend. He absolutely loved it , and was running across the locks “helping “ me open the gates like a pro ! The canal boat company was really helpful and very dog friendly
6. What’s a typical day like for you at Hettie HQ?
After breakfast the first job is to check and update our social media usually . We feel like we have made some lovely friends on there along the way – just like Eva and Amelia 🙂
Next is a dog walk to wake us up – whatever the weather . Then time to switch on the computer , check emails and start whatever needs to be done that day. Always very varied which is lovely . If we are all in different places we try and have a FaceTime conversation at the end of the day to catch up with everything. We also try to switch off a little at night , but its quite hard with smartphones these days.
7. Are you attending any events this year ?
We did our first big exhibition in February this year at the NEC Spring Fair which was exciting and we learnt a lot. We are currently looking at which exhibitions / shows are going to be the best suited to Hettie – polo matches , horse trials etc . Lots to choose from and we want to make sure we make the right choices.
8. Would you like to share with us a little behind the scenes secret about Hettie people don’t know about ?
We are very fortunate to have bought a holiday home in south west France about 10 years ago , and each summer we go ( with the dogs ) for about 5 weeks. Working for ourselves means that we can continue to work there , and of course our order line and lovely British manufacturers continue to work here.
9. Who are some of your favourite British designers ?
Mary Quant was amazing and revolutionised british fashion . Tamara Mellon also redefined luxury, and Stella Mcaartney and Matthew Williamson offer some classic designs.
We were lucky enough to meet Bianca Elgar a few months ago on a collaborative photoshoot. She designs beautiful silk scarves with eye catching colours.
10. What’s in store for Hettie this coming year ?
Thats the great thing about a young brand – you never know what’s around the corner. We are a lifestyle brand , and have many ideas for products to add to the range – for all the family. With so many beautiful fabrics to choose from at Moon we are spoilt for choice with designs. This week we have been talking to an american company about a possible collaboration – fingers crossed ! We have also been asked to collaborate on some photo shoots with other well known brands for AW17 which is exciting
